Halloween began some two-thousand years ago in the Celtic region of
the world. Some two-thousand years ago Halloween began and was known as
the festival of “Samhain” which took place on the eve of November 1st.

It was believed in order to be protected by the dead souls which assumably roamed
the earth on this particular night, the household would set food and drink out on
their door step to keep them at bay. The villagers would dress up as ghosts
themselves when they went out on this night to protect themselves from the
dead ghosts they feared.
“Souling” was also practiced. It meant women would bake “soul
cakes” to sell in exchange for money and would thus pray for the souls
of those departed. “Guising” began as children dressed up in costumes and
went door to door to receive money or gifts from the villagers.
It was not until the late 1950's that Halloween became what it is still
known for today. Pranks and tricks such as wrapping toilet paper around trees
or throwing eggs on windows or cars became popular. “Trick or
Treat” became the slogan to be said at each household door in order to obtain
candy. Billions of dollars are spent each year on candy and costumes.
Getting the children's costumes purchased may be an added expense
for parents but the anticipation of the event in itself warrants the cost!
